Rafael Lovato Jr Lyndhurst Jiu Jitsu seminar

Rafael Lovato Jr Lyndhurst Jiu Jitsu seminar

Rafel Lovato Jr put on a Lyndhurst NJ seminar at Savarese Jiu Jitsu Academy. Professor Chris Savarese, the school owner, had this to say on Facebook “Awesome seminar by Rafael Lovato Jr at the Academy tonight! 48 people showed up in a snowstorm to improve their BJJ. Rafael kept it real by showing some very important concepts about playing open guard & staying in good position & ended the night with some cross knee passing with the cross collar grip. All useful stuff with the theme of the night being efficiency. I always learn a ton of BJJ when he is in town. ‪#‎snowcantstopourprogress‬‪#‎lovatobjj‬ ‪#‎savaresebjj‬ ‪#‎njbjj‬ ‪#‎jiujitsu‬ ‪#‎bjj‬” Savarese is part of Lovato’s worldwide Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team and his rep on the East Coast.

New Facebook Page and Wallid Ismail vs Roleta

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fHoDHtt2f4

After realizing how many new BJJ students have no idea who the pioneers of this great art are, I have decided to use my NJBJJ.com Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/njbrazilianjiujitsu?notif_t=page_new_likes) and this website to help people learn about the first World Champions and pioneers of our art. I will pick 1 competitors or fighter per week and post matches or fights of him or her with a description so you can learn about our arts history in competition. I encourage my fellow school owners to tell their new students to like this page. ALL my Savarese BJJ students should like and follow this page as frequently as possible. Lets all grow through BJJ. Knowledge is power. The first person we will be featuring is Roberto “Roleta” Magalhaes. His nicknames means roulette, after his famous helicopter sweep that spun you like a roulette wheel. he is a 4x World BJJ Champion and 4x Pan Am Champion. He also finished 2nd 3x. He started training at 17yrs old under Joe Moreira and later switched to Gracie Barra when he became serious about his training. Roleta created one of the most revolutionary guards in the history of BJJ, the Inverted Guard. In 1996 Roleta was given his black belt with the intent of fighting in the World Championships that year. The big duel between the Carlson Gracie Academy and Gracie Barra was on the horizon and Carlson Gracie had an Ace in the Meio Pesado category by the name of Wallid Ismail who had been undefeated for a few years. Carlos Gracie planed to use his own “secret weapon†in Roleta and it worked. Walid was surprised by Roleta’s “strange†new position and ended swept by Roleta which was enough to win the bout between the two. Roleta would go on to win the tournament which was the very first World BJJ Championship. He continued competing through the late 1990′s and the early 2000′s getting the reputation of the best guard in BJJ during that time. Here is the match against Wallid talked about above. Wallid staredown was epic!

Fernando “Margarida” Pontes in action

Fernando “Margarida” Pontes in action

Attn Savarese BJJ Students: If you raised your hand that you didn’t know who Margarida was last night when Professor Lovato asked (even though I constantly bring up his name in class, talked about him in my interview w Marco Perrazzo 2 weeks ago and have shown videos of his matches at least 50 times in the last 3 years on our FB site and website..lol), here are some videos you’d better watch. First is the match vs Pe de pano that Professor Lovato was talking about. The other is for all the BJJ practitioners out there who say the cross-choke is a “beginner†move. It is the “Margarida†vs. Fabio Gurgel 2001 Pan Am match. For some background for you new guys out there, Gurgel in a 3x World Champion, 4x Brazilian National Champion, the co-founder of the Alliance BJJ team and the teacher of Marcelo Garcia and Demien Maia. He is known as one of the best guard passers ever and is a legend in the BJJ World. Margarida was only a blackbelt for 1 year but the year before, he won his weight class and the Absolute, defeating everyone by submission. It was actually Gurgel who gave Margarida his nickname. Fabio taught a class at Fórmula academy, in São Paulo, and when he noticed the colored mouth guard of Pontes, he joked: “Where I come from, we call that margarida (daisy)†. Margarida moved up in weight just to fight Gurgel, saying “I wanted to show that the theory defended by the Gracie family is essentially true, how Jiu-Jitsu was created for the small to overcome the big.â€. It was the first time Gurgel ever tapped out in competition.

About Savarese BJJ Kids Program:

LYNDHURST NJ CHILDRENS MARTIAL ARTS

The main goal at Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is to boost the self-esteem of our students. Every day in the United States, over 100,000 kids miss school due some form of bullying. Many believe that fear of bullying may be the leading cause of low self-confidence in children. Worse, statistics suggest that less than 20% of kids actually report acts of bullying.  At Savarese BJJ, we focus on the physical, emotional and mental well-being of our students. We call themâ€Life Skills.†We provide our young students with the most powerful defensive skills so they will be ready to stand up against bullies. In addition, we assist our students with the development of characteristics and skills they will need in order to live a happy and balanced life.  Our students develop confidence, discipline, courage, responsibility, and leadership among other important values. We promote non-violent resolutions to conflict. For many children learning to respect authority can be a difficult lesson to learn. Respecting authority is quite important in the teaching of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We aim to develop life-improvement skills as well as building the child’s character in a positive way. Our belief is uncoachable kids become unemployable adults. We teach these skills in the most fun atmosphere possible.

Lyndhurst NJ Childrens Martial Arts is beneficial in many ways. Children who participate in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes quickly increase their physical fitness level. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves both large and small muscle groups in the body. Improvement of physical well-being is not the only goal.

Our program can and WILL help your child increase their confidence, self-esteem, discipline, while teaching them life skills that will last them a lifetime.

In our time-proven program, your child will be able to progress at their very own pace. We understand that everyone learns differently. No matter if your child can only train once a week or every day, we have the program that will fit your needs.

New Jersey kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu develops many traits in your child. These traits include:

  • Increased self esteem
  • Greater Self Discipline
  • Increased ability to Focus and Concentrate
  • Elevated Self Confidence
  • Overall Improvement in Attitude
  • Improved Physical Fitness Level
  • Development of Leadership Skills
  • Greater Respect for themselves and others
  • Increased Patience
  • Greater work Ethic
  • Better Understanding of How to Channel Aggression

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also a fun, competition based sport if you child chooses to compete. We prepare students to compete as well in separate competition based classes and we have one of the top competition teams in NJ, winning 6 team championship in various tournaments over the last 3 years.

Complaining by Jim Rohn

Complaining by Jim Rohn

Someone posted this in a group I am in and I had to share…
Read a GREAT Article from Jim Rohn.
“Complaining. There’s room for legitimate complaining, but if you let this deadly disease of attitude–complaining loose, it will conquer you. Complaining can take over your life, destroy you and leave you without anything.
Nobody wants to take along a complainer. Nobody wants to promote a complainer. Nobody wants to live with one. Nobody wants to be a partner of one. Nobody wants to have one around. Complaining leaves you out of more opportunities than you can possibly imagine if you let it take over and grab you by the throat.
If you don’t think complaining is bad, ask the children of Israel of Old Testament fame. They are typical of us all, but their story just happened to get in the Book. The story says children of Israel are slaves in Egypt. God performs a series of dazzling miracles and gets them out. Now they have their freedom and are heading for the Promised Land. But… the tragedy of the story—they never got there. Reason: from day one they started to complain.
They griped about the food—they had just been delivered from slavery and they are complaining about the food? They whined and cried and griped about the water. In the desert they HAD water to drink, but… it didn’t taste that good? They whined and complained about the leadership… that had just delivered them from slavery? They complained that it was too hot, too cold, too far, too difficult, too rocky. They whined and cried for years—40 to be exact. Finally, God said I’ve had it—trip canceled!
The story says that they died in the desert and never reached the Promised Land—after all that trouble! I believe this story teaches two things:
1) Indulge in complaining long enough and you will get your future canceled—future promotions, future opportunities.
2) Even God himself can only take so much complaining.
I think you get my point. Complaining is not for the winners in life. You must focus on what you can do, not what you cannot. And you must focus on the opportunities not the difficulties. When you do this you will not only inspire yourself but you will be an example for others to follow as well.”
I’ve always told my Instructors to be a “Thermostat”, not a “Thermometer”. A Thermometer measures temperature, a Thermostat changes the temperature. Be the type of person that adds positivity and energy as soon as you enter it. Don’t be the type of person that adds energy and positivity by leaving it…

Pequannock Jiu Jitsu instructor earns promotion

Pequannock Jiu Jitsu instructor earns promotion

Congrats to Chris Laciura, who runs our affilate Academy, Training for Life Martial Arts Academy in Pequannock, NJ ( http://www.training4lifema.com/index.php ), on receiving his brownbelt from Professor Savarese last night. Laciura when asked about his promotion,  said “Last night was a very special night for me. My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor, Professor Chris Savarese, promoted me to Brown Belt, alongside many others who I have had the privilege of training with for the last 7 years. I was very happy to have some of my students there with me, truly means a lot. This promotion was important to me because of what the journey from purple to brown has represented. When Professor Savarese promoted me to purple belt, he allowed me to begin spreading the art with my students under the Savarese name, which is an absolute honor. Teaching and sharing this amazing martial art has been extremely fulfilling and eye opening. My students, who have become training partners, also have had a great deal to do with me getting here. They have pushed me on the mats and forced me to evolve into a better teacher. I am very excited for the next stage of this journey.”

Lyndhurst Kids Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Earns Black Belt

Sean Bermudez a Lyndhurst Kids Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Earns Black Belt. Last night in front of over 200 fellow students, friends and family Kids BJJ Instructor Sean Bermudez was awarded his Blackbelt by Professor Chris Savarese.  Sean was Prof. Savarese’s 3rd student to sign up and has been training at the school since 2006.

When asked by Gracie Magazine for a quote on the promotion, Professor Sav said “It was my honor to put the belt around Sean’s waist last night. Sean came to me as kind of a lost kid 9 years ago and I have watched him grow tremendously on and off the mat. He literally became a man in our academy. He is an example for all my students to follow, proving that you can do anything you put your mind to through hard work. I couldn’t be happier and more proud of a student.â€

About BJJ:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu aka Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the art of ground fighting. Originally developed by the Gracie family for smaller guys in the country of Brazil, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu has evolved into an effective self defense system, a thriving sport, and an essential component of Mixed Martial Arts fighting (MMA). Gracie Jiu-Jitsu does not incorporate many of the fancy movements and complicated theories that other martial arts employ. In the real world – most fights end up on the ground – you have to be prepared for that scenario. The Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy teaches practical self defense techniques with a no attitude, no ego mentality. Students learn sport aspects and practical methods that don’t require strength or athletic ability. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was made for everyone. A typical class begins with a light warm up and stretch. Once everyone is loose, instructor Chris Savarese teaches students practical techniques and delivers personal care to ensure the class is learning and applying. Once the technique has been covered, live sparring for students who wish to participate is permitted. With Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, live sparring is an integral part of the art and what separates Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from most other martial arts. In Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, sparring is encouraged and fun! Come into our New Jersey Brazilian Jiu JItsu Academy and take a free class! Give us a call at 201-933-5134.

The benefits our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense programs are endless! A greater sense of self leads to positive results in a world full of challenges. Our staff’s lineage goes directly back to the Gracie Family who created the art. Teach your children that perseverance wins over any obstacle in life, and let our program prove it to them! Develop functional muscles, not bulky, do-nothing muscles! The life of every person in our program who has been training for more than a year has been changed dramatically! If you want to join the fastest growing BJJ Academy on the East Coast, Savarese BJJ is waiting for you! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Rafael Lovato Jr Signature Lucky Gi

Rafael Lovato Jr Signature Lucky Gi

Great message from the Rafael Lovato Jr facebook Page yesterday…worth the read

“Victory is always possible for the person who refuses to stop fighting” – Napoleon Hill

This quote is on my signature Lucky Gi and t-shirts for a reason. It signifies everything I have learned in martial arts and in life and it is what I try to pass on to my students more than any Jiu-Jitsu technique or game. If you give your best in everything you do and never let the temporary defeats or obstacles stand in your way, then it is only a matter of time before you reach your main objective. You can never stop believing in yourself! In competition this is the most valuable asset you can have as a fighter, the undying will to win!

If you never stop fighting and still lose, you can hold your head high in defeat knowing that you gave your all. That is all I ask of my students who compete and it is not a coincidence that my most accomplished competitor, Justin Rader, is a strong example of this. Now he has built a reputation for being one of the fiercest and toughest competitors in the game and is passing along the same ethic to the up and coming Lovato’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors. The strategy is always the same, keep going forward and when you feel the other person slowing down, then you push forward even harder. Thanks to Mike Calimbas Photography for recognizing our philosophy and sharing it with your followers!

Never accept anything less than your all in everything you do!
