Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu, which is said to date back all the way to the 3rd and 8th Centuries in India and China, respectively, is a grappling themed martial art that relies on leverage to bring an opponent to the ground. Once on the ground the main premise of Jiu Jitsu is to apply positional control that leads to submission, most commonly chokes or joint locks. By the end of the 19th Century, the martial art had become a means for self-defense and was widely popularized by a man by the name of Mitsuya Maeda. Maeda was recognized for fighting any willing opponent just to prove the effectiveness and efficiency of his martial art.

After traveling the world teaching and spreading Jiu Jitsu, Maeda finally made his way to Brazil in the early 1900’s and changed the face of fighting forever. Maeda, once in Brazil, began teaching his Jiu Jitsu and spreading it to many people throughout the country, one family that took great notice was the Gracie family. Carlos Gracie, as well as his younger brother Helio Gracie, are widely acknowledged as the pioneers of contemporary Jiu Jitsu. The Gracie Brothers began to adapt the techniques taught by Maeda into a finely polished, leverage based art that can now be practiced and perfected by everyone, weak or strong. Because of the popularization of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil during the beginning of the 20th Century, the art is most commonly known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ.

BJ Penn’s proudest moment!

BJ Penn’s proudest moment!

According to BJ Penn, his proudest moment was when he won the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) world title

http://www.jiujitsutimes.com/b-j-penn-greatest-career-moment-was-winning-the-jiu-jitsu-mundials/

About BJ Penn

The Hawaii born Penn and he brother JD started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 17 under Tom Callos, the father of BJJ sensation Keenan Cornelius. Callos taught B.J. and his brother what he knew. BJ then moved to California and began training at the Ralph Gracie BJJ Academy. It was an excellent school that many top fighter and BJJ competitors came from including Dave and Dan Camarillo, Cameron Earle and Kurt Osiender. BJ was training here during the time that he decided to pursue a career in martial arts. BJ trained with Ralph Gracie until purplebelt  and then moved to Nova União where he was eventually awarded his black belt in 2000 by Andre Pederneiras. Right after earning his blackbelt (I think it was 3 weeks later), he became the first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held in Rio de Janeiro. Penn’s most well-known and prestigious achievement was placing first in the black belt division in the 2000 world championships, but he had success at the Mundials in previous years. In 1999, at the age of 20, Penn finished 3rd, earning himself a bronze medal in the brown belt division, losing only to Fernando “Tererê” Augusto, and in 1998, earned a silver medal, placing 2nd in the blue belt division. Penn is thought to have earned the fastest legitimate black beltin the art of BJJ.

Congrats Raf!! After making an incredible recovery from surgery, Lovato was hungry to step back into action. After a couple of potential events fell through, he found himself looking at the IBJJF calendar looking for something to compete at. When he saw the Curitiba Open and the amount of Black Belts competing there in Gi & No-Gi divisions, his decision was made to return to the motherland of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After two days of matches, Lovato was the Gi & No-Gi Black Belt Weight and Absolute Champion, earning 4 Gold medals with 9 submissions in 9 matches! Clifton High School Wrestler earns jiu jitsu promotion

Clifton High School Wrestler earns jiu jitsu promotion

Clifton High School Wrestler Sean Yadimarco earned a jiu jitsu promotion yesterday, receiving his bluebelt from Professor Chris Savarese. Savarese is a 2nd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt and one of the first Americans to receive a black belt from Royler Gracie. He is the owner and instructor at the Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Lyndhurst NJ. Yadimarco is only 16 yrs old and that is a great honor to receive at such a young age. For a 16 yr old to receive a mens belt at that age, the instructor has to think very highly of him. Yadimarco has teamed up with a bunch of excellent teen aged competitors at Savarese BJJ and his presence has toughened them as they have helped his technique. Professor Savarese said “Sean has definitely added a lot to our teens and I am very proud of his training so far. Congrats Sean and keep up the great work!”
