Not gonna lie, sometimes being a BJJ instructor can suck, people can break your heart at times, and usually the people who you did the most for. But then you are reminded of the people who you made a difference in their lives and it always dwarfs the negative. Just received this gift from a student who is a former USMC Sergeant who is also a US Army physician in Iraq. People can be amazing and I am so honored and grateful that he thought to give me this. Thank you so much. This made what was a really awful week much better.

Savarese BJJ instructor gets promoted

Savarese BJJ instructor gets promoted

Savarese BJJ instructor gets promoted as Professor Anthony Del Guercio received the 1st degree on his blackbelt from Professor Savarese. Anthony has the “no excuses” mindset as his is a trial laywer by day and teaches BJJ at night in search of continued self-improvement. Professor Savarese has this to say
“Congrats to Professor Anthony Del Guercio on receiving the 1st degree on his blackbelt today. Another instructor filmed it but i wanted everyone to see and hear my words and thoughts about him and for any student not in class today to hear. Anthony has become an amazing blackbelt and instructor, he is a vital piece of our academy, and frankly, we wouldn’t have survived without him. He has helped make our Academy better than it has ever been and I am so glad he is a member of our team. He deserves all the goodwill that comes his way because he is so selfless when it comes to helping our students. He is a blackbelt in every aspect of life. Oss.”

Anthony Shares his thoughts

Today, I had the honor and privilege of receiving my first degree on my back belt. Words cannot describe how much this means to me.
For those who may not be aware, jiu jitsu has been an important and necessary part of my life for a long time now. If not for jiu jitsu, I would still be morbidly obese. If not for jiu jitsu, I wouldn’t have made it through one of the darkest, hardest times in my life. Jiu jitsu as a sport, self-defense art, and as a lifestyle has become a part of me and made me a better human being. Stated simply, jiu jitsu changed and bettered my life in ways words cannot describe.
As for my teammates, these people have trained and bled with me. They’ve become friends and family. They are constantly making me better, testing me, and helping me grow.
However, I must do a special shout-out to Professor

Chris Savarese

, a true instructor and mentor. Professor Sav had so many nice things to say about me today that I choked up and a few tears snuck out (those who know me know I don’t cry often or easily). While I appreciate everything he said, I have to remind people that, from personal knowledge, Professor Sav has one of the biggest hearts I know. He legitimately cares for each and every one of his students. Putting aside his pedigree and more than ample qualifications, his dedication and loyalty to the school and his students, both on and off the mats, is unmatched and greatly appreciated. It’s truly a rarity to find such heart and compassion coupled with skill and ability. His personal sacrifices to keep the school and, to many, a sanctuary, running all these years, especially during this pandemic, are not lost on us. I truly hope that everybody who trains has such an instructor. Many thanks for all that Professor Sav has done and sacrificed so that we all have a place to train and grow as jiu jitsu practitioners and human beings.

One final reminder to those who are thinking of training jiu jitsu, and as Professor Sav always says, if you want to do something, you will find a way. If you don’t, you will find an excuse. Stop making excuses. Get on these mats at Savarese Jiu Jitsu. Become a better you. I promise. You will not regret it.

Adopt A Cop BJJ seminar is huge success

Adopt A Cop BJJ seminar is huge success

The Adopt A Cop seminar is a huge success as 7 BJJ instructors got together to teach self defense for a great cause. One of the instructors, Professor Chris Savarese, owner of Savarese BJJ Academy in Lyndhurst NJ www.njbjj.com, had this to say on his Facebook Page: “What an amazing day yesterday at AllStar MMA Training Facility where I was blessed to be asked to help teach for a great cause, the Adopt A Cop BJJ organization https://adoptacopbjj.org/ , a donation based nonprofit that allows any police officer to train BJJ around the USA and they will pay your memeberahip until you are a bluebelt. I was lucky enough to teach alongside the Legend Renzo Gracie, my good friends and training partners Jamal Patterson, Alan Teo, Joseph Capizzi, , bjj world champion Johnny Tama and MMA fighter and former Navy Seal Mitch Aguiar as well as some police tactics instructors. We raised over 7k to help the cause and taught some tactics many of the officers in attendance. Like Mitch said, I really believe we saved lives yesterday through the $ and awareness raised and I’m proud that we were a part of this.”

Brian Procel promoted to 1st degree blackbelt

Brian Procel promoted to 1st degree blackbelt

Brian Procel promoted to 1st degree blackbelt bySavarese BJJ owner Chris Savarese on saturday. Savarese had this to say “Crazy weekend and I’m just getting a chance to gather my thoughts and write them down. I had the honor of promoting one of my first students, Professor Brian Procel, to 1st degree blackbelt on Saturday. I woke up Saturday and thought a lot about his journey with me and I was just filled with pride. Brian joined my school as a very young kid and at one point used to ride his skateboard from Jersey City to Lyndhurst every day to train. The left side of the second picture on this post is one of my favorite pictures since I opened my school of Brian winning his first tournament as a 17-year-old kid and the smile on his face is priceless. I watched him grow into a man right before my eyes and about two years ago I begged Brian to think about opening his own school as he had been teaching for a while and I thought he’d be great at it. The say how proud I am of him and what he’s done at his school in Jersey City, especially through the trials and tribulations of this year, makes me proud to be his instructor. Continued success Brian on your journey. Oss.”

Studying martial arts provides you with a physical challenge combined with a mental one – and teaches you to defend yourself, too.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a unique form of martial arts that teaches students to leverage their body weight to use in the ring or against an attacker. A descendant of Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is both a sport and a martial art – and it’s fun to learn.

Savarese BJJ Academy turns 14!

Savarese BJJ Academy turns 14!!

The Savarese BJJ Academy turns 14! Today is the 14th Anniversary of the Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

My Journey

Woke up this morning and took a moment to reflect on the journey. I opened this school with nothing but guts. No money, no plan. Thinking about what I know now compared to what I knew then, looking back now, it’s amazing I didn’t go out of business. I can only laugh at my ignorance. Over these 14 years, I have personally have grown so much as an instructor, a business owner, BJJ practitioner and most importantly, as a person. It was truly the best decision I ever made. I am so thankful for those who have supported me and helped me grow during this journey. To know how much we as a team have made a difference in the lives of the people in the room and in our community for years and generations to come is the most rewarding feeling one can have. Lives are changed EVERY DAY here. People become better versions of themselves before our eyes. As a white and blue belt, doing something like this seemed like a pipe dream. It was a goal that seemed almost unattainable but I am proud that it was a goal and dream reached. I would like to thank all my students whose role plays an important part in the success of our Academy. I am so proud of the way everyone treats each other and I can honestly say the atmosphere in our Academy is what I am most proud of. Just a group of people who stand by each other every day in pursuit of a bigger picture, leaving their problems and ego at the door and trying to become better martial artists and people every day. I am even thankful for the bad times, the students who opted out of this journey with me, because the lessons I learned from those times made me stronger and better. Looking forward to helping others grow on and off the mats for as long as humanly possibly. Thanks to all my students for their trust and dedication and to everyone on the ride w me. I truly am grateful. As we begin the rebuild process after this dumpster fire known as 2020, i can honestly say I love where we are right now as a TEAM, w everyone on the same page.

Academy History

These 3 pics show our journey from the outside of the Original 900 sq ft Academy at 482 Stuyvesant Ave where it all started. This place had a drum set in the office. It had a door that was so short that in the winter winds of cold would blow through. We constantly put holes in the walls while training.
Next was 500 Stuyvesant Ave. It had the poles, ugghhh! This 2nd floor Academy was a microcosm for many of our journeys. It was a place where many of us grew and ascended to new heights. For me, it was a truly special and meaningful place for many of my upperbelts and where others got their start.
And lastly, our home, our 5500 sq ft facility at 40 Park Ave. The place I always dreamed we’d someday have.

Thanks to the Gracie Family http://www.graciehumaita.com/ for bringing this amazing art into my life and the lives of my students
Looking forward to what the future brings!
