Read This book!

Read This book!

Read this book! Relentless by Tim Grover. Just finished this book (Thanks Anthony DiPasquale) One of my favorites. Written by legendary trainer Tim Grover has taken the greats—Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and hundreds of relentless competitors in sports, business, and every walk of life and made them greater. He’s direct, blunt, and brutally honest, he breaks down what it takes to be unstoppable, how you keep going when everyone else is giving up, you thrive under pressure, you never let your emotions make you weak. He details the essential traits shared by the most intense competitors and achievers in sports, business, and all walks of life. He shows you how to trust your instincts and get in the Zone; how to control and adapt to any situation; how to find your opponent’s weakness and attack. Awesome read.

GSP, John Danaher & Gordon Ryan on Fridman Podcast #260

GSP, John Danaher & Gordon Ryan on Fridman Podcast #260

I listened to  Georges St-Pierre, John Danaher & Gordon Ryan on the Lex Fridman Podcast #260 yesterday and there is some very good theory in there. I always encourage you guys to listen to stuff about the theory of BJJ, especially from top guys in their fields, that’s why I’m always frustrated when I bring people in for a seminar and you don’t ask questions at the end. There’s a lot of good stuff in this video, even stuff you’ve heard me say in class . In particular when George talks about the Connor McGregor-Jose Aldo fight. There was another great part when John talks about trends in BJJ, and the undervaluing and overvalue of certain things, and talks about how he thinks leglocks are overvalued right now, another thing I’ve been saying. And Gordon says some good things too and I wish all the followers of Gordon would listen to his genius mind in BJJ and not the trolling stuff he does to make more money. But he has a great mindset for being a champion which could definitely be learned from. I have benefited greatly from watching video, I have had students in the past who benefitted as well, Professor Chris is one who uses video a lot. So even though sometimes these things are long, they’re worth the time, especially people who would listen to a bullshit podcast about aliens for an hour, this is much more beneficial.😂  Watch the interview here :

BJJ Etiquette Advice

BJJ Etiquette Advice

Some great BJJ etiquette advice written by Savarese BJJ Blackbelt Chris Laciura, owner of Training 4 Life Martial Arts  in Pompton Plains NJ

Hey Guys, just wanted to talk a little bit about the proper etiquette that should be practiced during live rolling. We are very lucky to have a mix of students here. This means you have to be able to change the way you roll depending on who you are training with, while still having a PRODUCTIVE roll. Here are 2 situations broken down…this is to educate, not yell 🙂
A Lower Belt rolling with an Upper Belt: The upper belt will set the pace. Do not start your training session as if you just heard the gunshot at the Olympics. Use your training sessions with the higher belts and great learning experiences, which they are, as long as you understand the point is not to outrace them to a position, just relax. In most cases the higher belts are going to let you work, don’t take advantage or forget that.

A man rolling with a woman/teen: This is a very important one. This is the chance for the man to be 1000% technical, use ZERO strength, become less stiff, begin to flow from position to position, see how good your defense is by putting yourselves in bad spots, and **PRACTICE YOUR GUARD! **Trying so hard to tap a teen or a woman is not productive. There are going to be ample opportunities to hunt for the submission, this is not one of them. The most important aspect to the roll in this situation is, it needs to be PRODUCTIVE and both people need to benefit. Some ways I make these rolls productive are constantly changing positions and maybe I catch a submission and release it and then move to something else. Keeping a crappy choke on for too long or trying as hard as you can to get the arm is not beneficial in this situation, MOVE ON. The majority of my time here will be spent playing guard, if I work on top it’s to work on guard passing, if I get the pass, guess what? I LET THEM WORK THEIR ESCAPE, remember both need to benefit. Staying on top in mount or side mount the entire time is pointless and unproductive in this PARTICULAR situation.
APPLY IT.

Professor Chris Savarese leads top Lyndhurst BJJ Program Savarese BJJ Academy on Park Ave. With over 400 students and 2 affiliate schools, Procel BJJ in Jersey City and Training 4 Life Martial Arts  in Pompton Plains, the Academy has produced some of the top practitioners of Jiu-Jitsu in NJ and the East Coast. Savarese had this to say :
Love my team. Those who stay become champions, each in their own way. Being a champion of your mindset leads to championships/titles/wins EVERYWHERE in life. If I am on you about doing better, it’s because I see more in you than you do in yourself. It’s a compliment. Not too many people will do that, they will sit on the side and watch you fail. #lyndhurst #bergencountybjj #njbjj #championstrainhere

Facing Fears

Facing Fears

A yoda quote is drawn in black and white.

What is true self defense?

What is true self defense?

What is true self defense? It been a question for the ages. But longtime martial arts blackbelt Dave Kovar recently gave this answer that I wanted to share.
For most people, obesity, stress and depression are a way bigger threat than a back alley mugger.
As much as I love martial arts, I believe that true self defense is not just defending yourself against the bad guy. It is also defending yourself against sickness, injury, bad attitudes (yours and others) and apathy.
So…is your guard up?
