Lyndhurst Jiu-Jitsu leader wins European Championship

Lyndhurst Jiu-Jitsu leader wins European Championship

Congrats to Rafael Lovato Jr, the Lyndhurst Jiu-Jitsu leader won the European Championship last weekend. The 38 yr old Lovato won his first European title ever! He did so in the ultra-heavyweight division, absolutely dominating his opponent, Guilherme Bacha. Bacha had won the World BJJ Championship and Pan Am the previous year. The ex-Bellator MMA Champion was forced to retire from a head injury and decided to go back to competing in BJJ only.

Back to his roots

Since the announcement, Lovato has gone back to his roots, competing in multiple jiu-jitsu tournaments and super fights. The champ has done very well in his return, only dropping matches to the top competitors in his division. Lovato turns 39 in June, and despite being qualified to compete at the Master 2 age division, Lovato decided to test himself against younger foes in the Adult division. He fought three matches to get to the finals, submitting his first two opponents with arm bars and his third with a choke from the crucifix. In the final, Lovato faced Bacha of team Checkmat, aworld championjust last year. Lovato swept Guilherme early, taking a 2-0 lead. Guilherme tied it up with a sweep of his own to even the score. Lovato then earned a second sweep, this time from the x-guard position. Once on top, Lovato utilized the pressure passing skills to win by a final score of 7-2.

Back on top

With the win, Lovato secured his first major black belt adult title since the Brazilian Nationals in 2013.

Savarese Jiu-Jitsu standout takes 2nd at Girls HS Wrestling States

Savarese Jiu-Jitsu standout takes 2nd at Girls HS Wrestling States

Savarese jiu-jitsu standout Theresa “Baby T” Zeppetelli took 2nd place at the Girls HS Wrestling State Championship this weekend at 107lbs. In only her 2nd year of wrestling, after her first was cut short by knee surgery, Zeppetelli improved so much that she ran through the season and regions, entering the States as a #2 seed. Her instructor, Professor Chris Savarese, had this to say “Theresa “Baby T†Zeppetelli, words cannot describe how very proud of you I am. Nobody knows what you have overcome to be where you are. The anxiety, fears, smallest one in every room, etc. We lost the final but not the lesson. You will be back better than before next year. I will make sure of it. I just cannot express how proud of this young lady I am. She joined my academy as a little peanut in the left hand corner. Her dad trusted me and my vision, never jumped around and let us do what we do. She had inner battles, family loss, but very slowly, she started to crush every battle. She became the youngest purplebelt I ever gave out. Competed as a 16 yr old and beat one of the best in the country. Decided to take up wrestling to help her BJJ and follow her sister. Crushed that too. Continue what you are doing and you will crush life. Road to gold next year starts today. Let’s go!”

Advice on how to get good at BJJ

Advice on how to get good at BJJ

Everybody wants advice on how to improve all aspects of their jiu-jitsu. Well here is the one thing that I’ve always done that has never failed me. .

•
I show up. I show up when I feel good. I show up when I don’t feel good. I show up in a gi. I show up for no-gi. When I was younger, I showed up to compete or just watch every tournament. I showed up when my teammates competed, I showed up when they didn’t to watch the blackbelts and study. (which you guys can stay home and do now w all the steaming available, I do this almost every day watching college and Olympic wrestling trying to improve OUR takedowns). I showed up for IBJJF. I showed up for ADCC trials. I showed up for grapplers quest. I showed up for masters. I showed up for adult divisions. I showed up at local tournaments. I showed up at the worlds. I showed up when there are points. I showed up when it’s sub-only. I showed up to Strength and conditioning classes. I show up for regular class. I show up for competition class. I show up everyday, Monday-saturday and for a long time, sundays as well. I show up in the mornings. I show up in the evenings. I show up when I’m sore. I show up when I’m fresh. I show up when I’m happy. I show up when I’m sad. I show up when it’s raining. I show up when it’s hot AF. I show up when it’s freezing cold. I showed up when Renzo, Royler, Dave or whoever was teaching. I showed up when a brown belt is teaching. I showed up to classes when I outranked the instructor.

That’s it. That’s the secret. Show up and do your best. In a room like ours, with the instruction available and teachers always willing to help you, there is no way you don’t improve if you just…..show up.
