2nd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt Professor Chris Savarese held a free self defense at North Arlington High School last night. Over 30 students, teachers and parents took the course. It was part of Savarese’s personal mission to give back to the local communities surrounding his Lyndhurst NJ BJJ Academy. Savarese posted on his Facebook page “Had the honor tonight of teaching a self defense seminar at North Arlington High School tonight. Got a lot of positive feedback and the girls picked up things very quickly. Look forward to coming back real soon. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has given me so much in my life. I want to pay it forward and help as many people as I possibly can. I want to thank everyone who came out and attended and to my assistants, Sean Bermudez (one of my blackbelts) and Leo Alves, one of my best teenage students who actually attends that high school. Teaching self defense is very rewarding to me and teaching awareness of danger, especially to the teens, is something I know helped judging by the looks on their faces and questions asked. I hope to do more of these in the future.” If you would like to schedule a seminar, please contact the Academy.

Activities for kids in Lyndhurst

Activities for kids in Lyndhurst

When it comes to activities for kids in Lyndhurst, martial arts is only a great option. In addition to learning focus, discipline, weight loss, fitness and confidence, martial arts is 2nd to none. Valuable life skills are taught every day. The Savarese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, located on Park Ave, believes in teaching life skills as well in a family and team environment. Besides doing jiu-jitsu tournaments, we like to do team building events for the students to become friends and have fun as well. Last week, we have a Holiday ornament making party and the kids absolutely loved! Some of the kids were really creative! They were coming up with creations and designs that t-shirt companies would be jealous of! The instructors were fascinated at some of the ornamnets. They made their names, some made trees, other made their favorite sports teams like the Yankees, Mets, Giants, Devils and some of the dreaded Dallas Cowboys star. Others played tic tac toe, the school itself and some of the older students were even helping the younger students make better ones. In this day in age of electronic everything, it was nice to see the kids being creative.

Rickson and Royler Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Paris Demonstration.

This video of a Rickson and Royler Gracie jiu-jitsu demonstration in Paris is aweomse! It is nice to see them using many of the same techniques we use in self defense class. Kim Gracie, Rickson’s wife and the mother of Kron Gracie, assists in the demo. Rickson Gracie is considered by many in the BJJ community to be the art greatest practitioner. He is said to be “20 years ahead of everyone else.” When his cousin Renzo Gracie was once asked “How good is Rickson?” His reply was “He’s perfect.” He is a legend not only in BJJ circles but in the MMA world as well, being the main event in Pride Fighting Championship 1, an event that went on to become the greatest MMA organization ever in Japan and the world. He won the Japan Vale Tudo Championship in 1994 and 1995, defeated top Japanese fighter Masa Funaki in Colesseum and was victorious in Pride 1 and 3. Royler is one of the best Jiu-Jitsu competitors ever, winning the World BJJ Championship 4 times.

The sons of Grandmaster Helio Gracie

His sons, Rickson, Royler, Rorian, Relson, Royce, Rolker and Robin have taken on the task of proving the effectiveness of the art. Rorian is the guy who brought BJJ to the United States. Rickson is widely considered one of the best Mixed Martial Artists ever, Royler was a 4x World BJJ Champion and Royce is a multiple time UFC Champion and considered by some to be the most influential martial artist in the last 50 years. Acording to Rorian Gracie, his father Hélio is one of the first sports heroes in Brazilian history. He was named Man of the Year in 1997 by the American martial arts publication BlackBelt magazine.

Promotion Night at Savarese BJJ affiliate Training4Life Martial Arts Academy

Promotion Night at Savarese BJJ affiliate Training 4 Life Academy

Promotion Night at Savarese BJJ affiliate Training 4 Life Academy was a huge success! It was a very special day for Professor Chris Savarese and the Savarese BJJ team. It was the first promotion night at our affiliate Academy, Training4Life Martial Arts Academy (T4L) in Pequannock NJ. Coach Chris Laciura is the very first of Savarese’s students to make the journey into a full-time school owner and we are so proud of what he has done in a short amount of time. He has a bunch of great students, a tremendous atmosphere for learning and he and his wife Jessica have the most important quality in a great BJJ instructor, they care! They are determined to make everyone who sticks around successful. Chris started the night by giving a speech of his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey through at Savarese BJJ and how the Training 4 Life came to be. Professor Savarese then followed with a speech of our team, it’s philosophy and what each belt in BJJ represents. Many student earned their orange, green and bluebelts and a special shout out to Brian O’Connor and Joe O’Connor, who earned the hard earned and tough rank to reach in our team of purplebelt. Congrats to all of the T4L students who were promoted. You have taken another step towards in your journey through BJJ. It was nice to see the rest showing up and supporting the teammates. Like I said yesterday, BJJ is an individual art but where you need partners in order to progress. Treat your training partners w/ respect and be gentle where needed because you can’t get to blackbelt without them. Your training partners are a huge part of the journey. Keep up the great work! See you all soon.

Work your triangle chokes on both sides

Work your triangle chokes on both sides

Work your triangles on both sides! 2 lefty triangles this weekend. Kron Gracie in Rizin Fighting Championship vs Erson Yamamoto and Brian Ortega vs Diego Brandao in UFC. Beginners, make sure you can do your triangle on one side efficiently first. Once you are a at the level of around 1 stripe bluebelt, you must work on your closed guard submission attack from both sides.

The Triangle choke

The Triangle Choke, known as “Triângulo†in Portuguese or “Sankaku-Jime†(Japanese), is a very common submission in Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu. The triangle choke occurs when the attacker wraps his legs around the opponent’s neck leaving one of the target’s arms inside this “leg wrap†and another arm out. The pressure of the thigh across the neck will cause the blood flow to be disrupted to the carotid arteries leading the target to either submit or pass out. The triangle became a weapon of choice from the closed guard, and later, with the growth of new open guard attacks, this technique was solidified as one of the most popular submissions in Jiu Jitsu and MMA, later being used to decide some of the most memorable fights in combat sports, such as Royce Gracie vs Dan Severn (UFC 4), Fabricio Werdum vs Emilianenko Fedor (Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum) or Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen (UFC 117).

Famous Submission Fighters that Use(d) the Triangle

The triangle choke is arguably one of the most effective chokeholds and definitely one of the most common submissions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. It is incredibly effective as a counter-attack and, since it depends on the isolation of one of the opponent’s arms, hand strikes all of a sudden make the striker vulnerable. Due to this, many MMA fans are incredibly familiar with this move because of its effectiveness. In addition to Kron and Ortega, Demian Maia, Keenan Cornelius, Marcio Cruz, Ryan Hall, Fabricio Werdum, Braulio Estima, Rodrigo Minotauro, Rafael Lovato Jr, Jeff Glover and Baret Yosida are some of the MMA and BJJ World Champions who frequently use the triangle choke.

The triangle choke is one of the main submissions we teach at Savarese BJJ Academy in Lyndhurst NJ. If you are in law enforcement, you are making a mistake if you do not train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our Academy trains students from ages 5 to 75 at their own pace. Call 201 933-5134 for a free trial lesson today

Over 40 BJJ practitioner Frank Ferrante earns promotion

Congrats Frank Ferrante on receiving the 2nd stripe on his whitebelt from Professor Chris Savarese last week  Frank has a great attitude and is getting better every week. Keep up the great work Frank! ‪

You are never too old

You are never too old to take up martial arts. I always try to tell this to friends of mine over 40 who tell me “I’d love to try BJJ or Martial Arts but I’m too old.†Drives me crazy. As General George S. Patton once said “A lot of people die at 40, but they are not buried until 30 years later.†Don’t be one of those people!! Anything  can be accomplished with the right attitude and mindset. There are many reasons to start training in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I can tell you that I have never seen a BJJ practitioner who has practiced for 6 months not have their lives affected directly by practicing the art. BJJ is a lifestyle that trains not just your body but your mind as well. It is healthy lifestyle that will give you life skills, promote better health and fitness, and help with weight loss. At the Savarese BJJ Academy in Lyndhurst NJ, you are put through a 16 week course of just teaching you the basics of the art in a small class setting. It is like having a personal trainer for BJJ. If you are interested in trying BJJ, call us at 201 933-5134 for a free class or email us at [email protected].

Darce choke master Joe D’Arce NJ seminar

Darce choke master Joe D’Arce NJ seminar

Darce choke master Joe D’Arce NJ seminar was held last night at Savarese BJJ Academy in Lyndhurst NJ. Joe D’Arce is a 3rd degree blackbelt under the legendary Renzo Gracie and is one the top American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioners and teachers. D’Arce and Savarese BJJ owner Professor Chris Savarese are long-time friends and training partners. Professor Savarese posted the next day on his Facebook Page These pics represent 15 yrs of friendship on and off the mat. Thanks to my good friend Joe D’Arce for coming to NJ to share his knowledge w my students and I tonight. Every time I see him I learn something new. What a great seminar! I had one student tell me that one of the chokes he showed what worth the price of the seminar by itself. I know I say this after every seminar but if you missed this seminar, you missed out. I only bring in elite guys to do seminars and only do 4 a year. If you love BJJ and have goals to reach blackbelt ASAP or are a competitor or teacher, they should be mandatory for you. And if you brush that statement off, you don’t get it. I taught at Joe’s Grand Opening in Long Island and Joe has had my back through every part of my training since purplebelt, through teaching me great stuff every time I see him and was my corner in some of my toughest competition matches. I remember when Joe went in the hallway with me and practiced flying armbars on me because  my next opponent was tapping everyone in less than 10 seconds with flying armlocks. He is one of my favorite people and his friendship is one of the best gifts BJJ has given me. oss”

Darce choke history

D’Arce became a household name when he started hitting a rarely used choke in tournaments and in training shown to him by the great John Danaher. Joe and I went to Las Vegas to see one of Joe’s former students, Jay Herion, make his debut in the UFC. While there, we visited and trained at our friend Marc Laimon’s Cobra Kai school for 2 days. We exchanged many ideas with Laimon, who is an excellent teacher himself, and he loved the choke and started using it right away. He later started adding another choke he called the Marce” and many of his students started using these chokes. If you had ever seen Laimon at a tournament in those days, he was always the loudest voice there. He would constantly be screaming Darce him (what Laimon had named the choke), darce him and since his students were having so much success with it, it started catching on in the West. It was called the darce on the West Coast way sooner than back East as Joe is pretty humble and was kind of embarrassed by the name. But his favorite choke because a worldwide name but mostly because of Laimon.
