We will be covering 2 of the moves from this demo this morning!

Savarese BJJ Academy

The Savarese Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy offers the best training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from beginners, to pro Mixed Martial Artists, and Law Enforcement.   At our Academy, we focus on the team, meaning our students. Everyone has different reasons for training in the Martial Arts. Some enjoy the exercise, others want to learn self-defense, and some may wish to pursue a career in MMA or competition. The philosophy of this Team is to teach functional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that you will keep with you for the rest of your life. You will not be taught watered down technique, or be taught how to win a tournament without knowing how to defend yourself on the street.  We will teach you to be comfortable anywhere, with or without strikes; We will teach you to be comforatble on the feet, on the ground, off your back, how to control the situation, and you will have fun while learning it! Many of our students are Law Enforcement, Mixed Martial Artists and members of the Armed Forces.  People have diverse needs; that is why we have assembled equally diverse resources for the students at our school.

We are led by a Black Belt Professor,2nd degree blackbelt Professor Chris Savarese, who received his blackbelt straight from the source, Master Royler Gracie, one of Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s sons. Our instructors are hands-on teachers, often rolling with students of various ranks and skill levels. We teach philosophy, focusing on clearly explaining the principles of the techniques of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, in a way that people can understand.  We then incorporate drills that help students internalize those techniques in order to use them in live situations. If you are interested in a free class, call 201 933-5134 or email us at [email protected] for more info.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu means “gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding.†Jitsu means “art” or “technique” and represents manipulating the opponent’s force against himself rather than confronting it with one’s own force. It’s based on clinching and grappling techniques that utilize leverage, proper technique and timing as its principles. Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created and developed by Carlos and his brother Helio Gracie in the early 20’s in Brazil.

For 80 years, the Gracie family proved through no-holds barred matches against heavier and bigger opponents that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most efficient form of Self-Defense there is. BJJ, as it’s also known, it’s now practiced by every professional mixed martial artist in the world and is the primary form of Self-Defense taught to the military of many countries around the world and police forces everywhere.

BJJ training can be used for street self-defense (antibullying, rape prevention, law enforcement) and sport grappling tournaments. The philosophy behind Jiu-Jitsu’s success lays in the following strategy:
– Close the distance and clinch;
– Take the attacker/opponent to the ground;
– Establish a safe and dominant position;
– Finish the fight with the application of chokes or joint locks.

Savarese BJJ Academy is not only one of the top jiu-jitsu schools in bergen County NJ but in the country. If you are interested in trying a free class, call 201 933-5134 or email [email protected] for more details.

Leo Alves – Savarese Jiu Jitsu prodigy

Congrats to Leo Alves on earning the 3rd stripe on his orangebelt from Professor Savarese this weekend. Leo is the Academy prodigy, the kid the whole Academy keeps an eye on to make sure he is doing things right. I have never seen a 15 yr old w/ his skill, he is destined for great things and has World Champion written all over him if he keeps his head on straight. He has a great attitude not seen in teenagers these days and makes no excuses (our Academy motto). He is the kid who will ride his bike in the snow to come to class, shovel for his neighbors to earn $ to go to seminars, I just simply love everything about this kid. A room full of people feel the same and are ready w/ an ass-kicking if he changes. (But a warning my friends, get them in now because when he’s 18-19 yrs old, nobody will be able to touch him.) Congrats Leo, keep up the great work!

Savarese Jiu Jitsu, Lyndhurst NJ

The martial arts style we teach was developed in the 1920s by Carlos and Helio Gracie, 2 brothers who modified the techniques of Judo to make them easier for even a small or weak person to complete successfully. This is what makes Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu so powerful: It provides an advantage to women, children, the elderly and anyone else who might face a stronger and larger opponent.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a practical martial art that can be applied to real combat situations. If you are attacked by a mugger, a bully, a rapist or anyone else looking to do harm, you can neutralize the threat with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes for Adults and Children

We offer our classes for students of all ages. Among adults, our program provides practical techniques for avoiding altercations and neutralizing threats, including how to gain the upper hand in a fight with an armed opponent. Our children’s program has a special focus on bully prevention, addressing the circumstances that lead to bullying and how to neutralize the situation before it gets physical.

Unlike other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is non-confrontational: Ours is primarily a defensive art and is used for self-protection, not aggression. This makes it a very popular choice for parents who wish to provide their children with self-discipline and the ability to protect themselves.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ, is a grappling martial art that looks like a mix of judo and wrestling. Jiu Jitsu started in Japan, but became popular in Brazil after Mitsuyo Maeda,  a Japanese immigrant in the early 20th century, taught it to several local men including Carlos Gracie and Helio Gracie. The Gracie brothers, in turn, taught it to their sons who continue to show the world the art today. BJJ became popular in the USA in the early 1990’s after Helio Gracie’s son, Royce Gracie, used jiu jitsu to win the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Since Royce’s dominance in the early UFC’s, BJJ has become an essential skill in Mixed Martial Arts.

BJJ is the also most effective martial art for self defense. The reason is that it focuses on real life positions and situations and employs techniques that work against a resisting opponent or an attacker. One of the basic beliefs of BJJ is that once the techniques are learned, they can be used to defeat a larger and stronger opponent. This is because BJJ is based on technique and leverage as opposed to weight and strength. For the same reasons, jiu jitsu is also the best self defense martial art for women.

Professor Savarese trains with Rolker Gracie

Professor Savarese trains with Rolker Gracie. We are so lucky as students at Savarese BJJ Academy that our Jiu-jitsu professor, Professor Chris Savarese, came up through the ranks under the Gracie Family lineage and we get to learn the techniques he learned from the masters themselves. Professor Savarese posted this on Facebook yesterday about his training with Master Rolker Gracie: “Got to spend last night learning from Rolker Gracie. What a great night. I haven’t seen Rolker in over 15 years. I will never miss an opportunity to train with this generation of jiu-jitsu masters. The details you learn is priceless. NEVER STOP LEARNING! I hope to have him at my Academy in the future. I love the way he teaches in his funny and friendly way while teaching BJJ history in the process. If you ever have an opportunity to train with a red/black belt, it should never be missed.”

Lyndhurst High School student earns Jiu Jitsu promotion

Congrats to Myko Perevicius, a Lyndhurst High School student, for earning his blue belt from Professor Chris Savarese, a 2nd degree balckbelt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

*If you are a parent, please read*
Congrats to Myko Perevicius on receiving his bluebelt from Professor Savarese tonight. Myko is only the 2nd kid to have started in our kids program to make it to adult rank. Myko owes part of this promotion to his mom because there were a couple of times as a child and an early teen where he wanted to quit but his mom would not let him because she saw the positive effect BJJ has had on him. Myko won 2 divisions at the NJBJJF tournament on sunday and was so happy that he gave his mom a thank you kiss. Giving him this belt today was one of my happiest moments as an instructor. This belt was earned over 8 yrs and his smile showed it. Parents…I’ve never seen a adult who was happy that their parents let them quit as a child. I’m not telling anyone how to raise their children, just giving you food for thought.
Congrats Myko, I am so unbelievably proud of you!

Lyndhurst Jiu-Jitsu Kids team dominates tournament

What an awesome day yesterday at the NJBJJF for our competition team. We went in with our largest team to date, 35 kids, teens and adults challenging themselves. I was beaming with pride on the way home and smiling at how far many have come in such a short time and am excited at the prospect of how good many of you can be if you don’t quit. First, steal a phrase from my 1st BJJ instructor Dave Adiv, our kids fought like LIONS! Coach Sean Bermudez has done an amazing job w/ them and they are so lucky to have a coach like him who cares and is invested in them on and off the mat. They were amazing! Every kid won a medal! We finished 2nd place in the Team standings

The teens were absolutely incredible! Leo Alves, Myko Perevicious and Sean Yadimarco all won gi and no-gi. I bumped up Leo and Myko to fight in the bluebelt class and both won GOLD, Leo winning in the final in 24 seconds by triangle. Sean is scary good for his age as well. Arianny Zeppetelli was awesome as well, finishing 2nd and was inches away from winning her division as well. Isabel Doran stepped up and competed in her 1st tournament despite only training for a short time and finished 2nd in her division as well.
The adults were awesome as well Marco Ramirez, Robbie Alvarez and Nick Mullaney all taking 1st place, Caitlin McManus , Brian O’Connor, and Babatunde Ojo, Corey Peirone, Dan Czarnecki taking 2nd in their 1st tournament. Pete O’Connor and Byron Kelly took 3rd. Congrats to Andrew Kuntz, Elihud Santiago, Nick Tandrick and Marzio Alcala, all who fought really well but came up short this time. Also big congrats to Sean Bermudez who stepped up to compete in his 1st tournament as a blackbelt being a blackbelt for only 1 month and fought well before losing to Romulo Caju Azevedo by baseball bat choke.
