Savarese Jiu Jitsu Team Shines
The Savarese Jiu-Jitsu Academy shined at the NJBJJF Summer Open in Homdel, NJ this weekend, taking 2nd overall in the kids team standings.  Our kids were phenomenal, finishing only 4 pts away from 1st place with only 7 kids competing in the tournament. Every single kid who competed took home a Gold or Silver medal.
Our kids were awesome!
We have one of the top kids programs in the state of NJ because of the tireless effort of Professor Sean J L Bermudez, whose dedication is so valuable to us. He is constantly giving me ideas to tweak the program to make it run more efficiently. I don’t think anyone else could have build our program like this.
The Adult Competition Team was great too
Meanwhile, the adult competition team took home a handful of medals. The big stories being Coach Carlos Dorjo, who took 1st place in his division competing for the first time in five years after suffering from severe knee and leg injuries that kept him from training for almost three years. It was a very happy moment for everyone on our team when his hand was raised.
Also, two of our bluebelts, Handsome Mark Garcia and Leo Alves closed out the Absolute (no weight limit) Division. Each won three matches apiece despite being the 2 lightest guys in the division. Both took silver in their division.
Big Congrats goes out to Amy Sosa, Ivette Ponte, Jack Zee, Peter Bouzalakos, and Edward Vecchione for stepping up and competing in their first tournament! Sosa, Jack and Ponte all took silver medals in impressive performances. Congrats to Babatunde Ojo who fought some tough matches as well.
I am so proud of everyone who tests themselves, like I always tell everyone who competes “I am proud of you not because you won or lost, but because you aren’t afraid to fail. That is how we improve our jiu-jitsu and ourselves.”
It wasn’t the most successful tournament we ever had, but it was one of my favorites. Our energy was awesome and the team had a great vibe. Day by day, step by step, we grow. Like Confucius once said “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
