“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” – Francis of Assisi .
I love this quote as it pertains to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a white belt, the necessary thing you have to do to change your life is walk through that front door. And then come to class. The beginning of Jiu Jitsu can be frustrating at times. There is a ton of new information and many think “I am never going to remember this”. At our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class in northern NJ, we try to explain every day that everyone in that room has been in the exact spot you were. You will get through it in just 3 simple steps:
- Trust your instructor.
- Don’t quit.
- Don’t make excuses for why you can’t do things
Start by doing what’s necessary
Come to class. As often as you possibly can. Listen. Take notes. Ask questions.
Then do what’s possible
Drill the new moves you learned as often as possible. Fail. Fail again. The only way to get better at anything is to try and fail first. You will get better. Show up. Get tapped. But never lose sight of the fact that there is no losing in Jiu Jitsu class. It’s win or learn. You actually learn more by losing. Find teammates to help. But most of all, keep training. There will come a day when….
And suddenly you are doing the impossible
You are submitting people younger, stronger, more athletic than you. There is a new guy who asks for YOUR help. You start doing things you never thought you could. All of a sudden everything that seems so hard seems easy now. Like the great Renzo Gracie says “a blackbelt is a whitebelt who never quit!” You will look back at the beginning and laugh at yourself. But take a moment to be proud. You earned it.
