5/4/11 BJJ Match of the day Ze Mario Sperry-Roberto “Gordo” Correa
BJJ match of the day is 3x World champ and 4x ADCC champion Ze Mario Sperry vs. Roberto “Gordo” Correa in a 1997 Mundial (World Championship) Final match. Gordo, also a 96 World Champ and 4x Pan Am Champ, injured his knee as a purplebelt and through that injury, invented the “half-guard” as a way to keep training and it became one of the more popular position in modern day BJJ. Sperry was one of the best fighters of his era and along w/ Wallid Ismail, is responsible for bringing back the “Clock-choke”. He was also one of the best guard passers ever.
