August 2011
BJJ match of the day is the great Antonio “Nino” Schembri vs Steve Rosenberg at the 2010 Fabio Santos Open. Nino is a 2x World Champion and a legend in the sport, known for his creativity and amazing flexibility. He is famous for the use of the guard as an offensive tool, being the Omoplata (shoulder blade lock) and the Gogoplata (choke) or even the rubber guard some of his more famous moves. In a comeback match here, he easily dispatches a very good Rosenberg, who is a Pan Am Champion himself.
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING.” – Muhammad Ali
Match of the day is Davi Ramos vs. Joe Gutierrez at a Grapplers Quest last year. Ramos is a very impressive fighter and a World Cup and Brazilian National Champ. He is a BJJ black belt under Master Cesar Guimaraes (AKA “Casquinha”) from the Top Brother academy, though he also fights for the prestigious Atos team. Already being named as one of the top lightweight BJJ competitors in his native Brazil, he solidified his career at an international level after submitting 6 of his 7 opponents at the Grapplers Quest Las Vegas in 2011, finishing big names such as Jeff Monson and Joao Assis. Look for big things from him in the future.
“It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life.” – Sister Elizabeth Kenny
BJJ match of the day is he of the awesome moustache, Jeff “The Pipelayer” Glover vs. Boa Quch at the ADCC West Coast trials this year. Glover, a No-Gi World Champion and 2x Pan Am Champ, displays his awesome guard in this match as he patiently waits for his opening before he sweeps, passes and hits his guillotine. Newbies can learn alot from this match as Glover shows how tough it is to “run around” someones guard to pass who has a good guard and how he doesn’t panic as time is running low and the score is tied. he patiently waits for his opening and hits the sweep (which the ref missed…lol)
“The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win.” -Roger Bannister
BJJ match of the day is an Ultimate Absolute NYC match between Vinny “Pezao” Maglahaes vs. Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. Pezao is a 3x World and 2007 No-Gi World Champ. Buchecha is one of the best up and coming fighter as he is a 4x BJJ World Champ as well as a 4x No-Gi and 4x World Cup Champ. Vinny control this match though w/ leg attacks before finishing Buchecha w/ a toehold.
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of will.”- Vince Lombardi
Congrats to Juan Garcia on receiving his bluebelt from Professor Savarese this week!!! Great job Juan, keep up the great work!!!
BJJ match of the day is at the 2004 Pan Am between the 2 guys fighting in the Superfight at ADCC this year, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Braulio Estima. Both are multiple time World BJJ Champs and both have won ADCC. Jacare dominates this match but I am stoked for these guys to do battle at ADCC next month.
